Why the timings matter
Session 1 starts at 6:30 AM, so GIFT Nifty has been trading for nearly three hours by the time the NSE opens at 9:15 AM. Most of the overnight news is priced in by then. That's why the level around 9:00 AM is the one most traders quote as the opening signal.
Session 2 overlaps with Europe and the US, so big moves on Wall Street show up in GIFT Nifty the same evening, not just the next morning.

The first session closes at 3:40 PM IST. The second session runs from 4:35 PM to 2:45 AM IST the following morning.
Does GIFT Nifty trade on Saturdays?
No. GIFT Nifty trades Monday to Friday, except on NSE IX holidays.
Does GIFT Nifty trade on Indian market holidays?
